France · The city of palaces
Paris
Paris, at palace level.
France reserves its Palace distinction for a small circle of exceptional hotels, and Paris has more of them than anywhere else. This is where our European chapter begins.
The great hotels of Paris cluster on the Right Bank: around Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V, on Place Vendôme and Rue de Rivoli, and on the quiet avenues of the 16th that look toward the Eiffel Tower. A few minutes separate them on foot, yet each has a character of its own, from gilded salons to calm, contemporary suites.
We judge Paris hotels on the quality of the sleep, the courtyard or garden that shelters the room from the city, and the restaurants under the same roof. Every address below is a hotel we would send our own families to.

Practical
Before you go.
- Getting there
- Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is 45 to 60 minutes from the centre by car. The Eurostar arrives at Gare du Nord from London in about two and a half hours.
- When to go
- May, June, September and October are the loveliest months. August is quiet and calm. Rates rise sharply during the fashion weeks.
- Currency
- Euro (EUR). A small city tax is added per person per night.
- Our tip
- Ask for a room on the courtyard or garden side. In Paris, the quiet room is the luxury.
