St. Moritz, where winter holidays began.

Six grand hotels in the high Engadin valley, at 1,856 metres. Most of them close between seasons, so the dates matter as much as the room.

St. Moritz sits at 1,856 metres in the Upper Engadin, a high valley of frozen lakes and larch forest. In 1856 Johannes Badrutt took over the guesthouse that became the Kulm, and in 1864 he persuaded four English summer guests to come back for the winter. The town has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948, and in winter the frozen lake holds polo and horse racing.

The grand hotels here are seasonal. Most open from early December to late March and again for a short summer, and each sets its own dates. Pontresina, about 7 kilometres away, is quieter and keeps longer seasons. We list every hotel's published season on its page.
